So I promised that Sundays would be "extras" day, sort of like a crappy DVD that only has one special feature. Anyway, today I'm busting out the original sketch for the first page of Gas Baby. There are a lot of things different with this version, including the design of the Gaseous Babe himself.

The whole reason I came up with the character in the first place was because I was making fun of the English synopses on the back of Hong Kong DVD boxes. The opening lines of this page are my impression of said HK translations (hence it not making much sense). Well, the scan didn't go so well since the whole thing was in light pencil, but you'll get the picture.

When I first started Gas Baby and it was only 10 pages long (ending right when Gas Baby gets shot by Cornbread), I made about 20 B&W copies of it and shipped it to people from the Kung Fu Cult Cinema forums all over the world.

The response was really fantastic, and two of my favorite regulars, Mark James (Infecta) and Michael Stover (ViciousKnives) wrote an afterword and foreword respectively. See, originally I was dead set on making Gas Baby a print project. Once I got a scanner, I faced reality and decided to host it all online. Anyway, here are the documents that were to appear at the beginning and end of the first collected volume:

Foreword
Who is Joseph Luster? It's not an easy question, and perhaps the answer is more than a fragile heart like this one can bear. However, I can say with some confidence that he's no one if not the man behind the legend, the brightest shooting star with a golden aura of putrid indestruction, Gas Baby.

There are a few vastly different ways to experience this story. One can read it as a book, lazily drifting from one arc to another like a drunken cherry blossom wanders from a dead branch to the brilliant edge of the world, hugging the endless abyss of nothingness in the sky, or, one can simply bath in it, absorbing its rich, epic tapestries like a fat man does dinner rolls, savoring the touch, the taste, and the warmth. There are clearly benefits to each way, but this humble foreworder would advise prospective readers to enjoy the second first. Some things can only be learned by jumping naked through a ring of blazing gas, and such is Gas Baby. Only by participating in this journey directly, as a friend rather than a reader, will one partake of the endless fruits of love and knowledge that burst from the mind, or, more accurately, the guts of Jo Lust -- may his many secretions be our nourishment.

An Afterword
Such was the power of the Gas Baby chronicles I was physically aroused to the point where I was on my vinegar strokes at the merest thought that such a mind as Luster’s could roam this world unhindered and come into my own abode via the medium of comic artistry and wolfbag me so savagely that no amount of medicinal ointment could salve the open wounds I suffered at the hands and appendages of this clearly disturbed young man and no amount of kitchen towelling could soak up the bodily fluids so gleefully lathed upon my eager yet horrified eyes.

Its like an itch that cannot be scratched, a welt reminding one of one’s past indiscretions with leather-clad young lady’s in the darkened alley’s and walled yards of some backwater cesspit town populated with dungaree wearing hare-lipped ginger children and cackling old women who indulge in the noble art of pipe smoking and masturbation at the very glimpse of their fathers buttocks. Yes, a veritable stiletto heel induced scar forever imprinted on ones forehead as a warning to those of a nervous and less temperate disposition not to involve themselves with the wonderfully warped and despotic vision that courses through the very veins of Joseph Luster like a blind leper who has absent-mindedly mistaken his jalapeno sauce bottle for his haemorrhoidal treatment cream. If not, then wake up and smell the kumquats, for I see a very prosperous and indulgent life for all those who follow his giddy works to their very zenith and beyond.

The Arabian Prince's "Innovator" is in full moan as 50 pages of Gas Baby lie strewn about my desk. They're all scanned and ready to be uploaded, but what happens next?

I hate to break up the flow of comic posting here, but I thought I should address what's going to be happening on this page in the future. At least for the parts of the comic that are completed, I'll be uploading a chapter a week. Roughly, I'll spread this out with three pages a day from Monday-Thursday, two on Friday and one on Saturday.

What about Sunday? Well, I have some "extras" I can post after each chapter. Stuff like the original, scrapped first page of Gas Baby that I never went with.

Right now I'm recoloring the cover that's posted on the bottom of this page (AKA entry no. 1). I'll make it look much sexier (the coloring on it sucks, I know).
